The mini international neuropsychiatric interview (MINI) is a structured clinical interview that has been translated into more than 40 languages and is used in more than 80 countries. The MINI is a brief diagnostic tool typically used by non-specialist physicians to diagnose mental disorders, particularly mood and anxiety disorders. It was developed in 1998 by Sheehan, Lecrubier, Sheehan, Amorim et al., with major contributions from European and American clinicians. The 7th edition of the MINI includes new modules on internet addiction disorder and cannabis use disorder to address frequently seen research topics in addiction medicine. The MINI now assesses the following mental disorders:In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) "The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision" (ICD-10), a diagnosis is made based on this interview alone with a gold standard of a clinical diagnosis from a trained mental health professional. The MINI is widely used in psychiatry. In 2009, the World Health Organization estimated that more than 80% of all psychiatric diagnoses worldwide are made according to the MINI criteria. In 2003/2004 it was estimated that the MINI was being used for over 100 million diagnosticians from more than 200 countries around the world. In 2010 it was estimated to be the most widely used diagnostic interview worldwide. In 2015 it was estimated that the MINI is being used by more than 2 million people worldwide. The MINI has taken a central role in the development of clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices for a wide variety of mental disorders, including depression, pain, dementia, and schizophrenia. Several organizations have recommended the use of the MINI as a screening tool for mental disorders in order to increase detection rates or access to care. The validity and reliability of the MINI were studied in 2002 using an independent set of clinician-administered interviews (SCID) with DSM-IV diagnoses (n=280) made by senior psychiatrists (n=14). The study concluded that "the MINI has acceptable validity and reliability, particularly in the areas of schizophrenia, major depression, and anxiety disorders." The findings were also consistent with the Costello "et al." study which concluded that the MINI was a valid measure for screening for psychiatric disorders in primary care. Other studies have examined the MINI's validity and reliability using a gold standard interview. In a 2003 study of the diagnostic accuracy of the MINI with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders (SCID-CV), it was found that while the MINI score correlated moderately well with a clinical diagnosis made by trained clinicians, there was no overall difference in accuracy between this interview and a clinical interview. In another study, researchers compared rates of misdiagnosis based on diagnoses made by lay people with those made by psychiatrists. They found that overall misdiagnosis rates were similar in both groups, although more misdiagnoses were made when diagnoses were based on a psychiatrist's evaluation rather than on a layperson's evaluation alone.
